Testing Without Code
A/B testing does not require developers for every test. Visual testing tools allow marketers to make changes and measure impact. The key is testing the right things and interpreting results correctly.
Tools for No-Code Testing
Shopify-specific tools
Shoplift and similar Shopify-native tools integrate with your theme and enable visual editing of product pages and other elements.
General CRO tools
Convert, VWO, and Optimizely work with Shopify through script injection. More powerful but may require more setup.
Tool selection
Consider: ease of use, Shopify integration quality, pricing at your traffic level, and features you actually need.
What to Test
High-impact elements
- Product page layout and content
- Add-to-cart button appearance and placement
- Product imagery and gallery
- Pricing presentation
- Trust elements and social proof
Lower-impact elements
Navigation, footer, blog formatting. Test if you have traffic, but prioritize high-impact areas first.
Running Valid Tests
Sample size
Small sample sizes produce unreliable results. Calculate required sample size before starting. Expect to need thousands of visitors per variant.
Duration
Run tests for at least 2 weeks to account for day-of-week variations. Longer for low-traffic sites.
One change at a time
Testing multiple changes makes it impossible to know what caused results. Test one hypothesis per experiment.
Statistical significance
95% confidence is the standard threshold. Do not call tests early based on incomplete data.
Common Mistakes
Stopping early
Early results are often misleading. Commit to the planned duration.
Testing tiny changes
Button color changes rarely have measurable impact. Test meaningful differences.
Ignoring segments
Overall results may hide segment differences. A change might help desktop but hurt mobile.
