Two Paths to International Expansion
Shopify offers two approaches for selling in multiple countries: Shopify Markets (selling from one store to multiple regions) and multiple stores (separate store per region). The right choice depends on your business requirements.
Shopify Markets
One store serving multiple regions with localization.
How Markets works
- Single store with localized experiences per market
- Local currency pricing (automatic conversion or explicit pricing)
- Localized domains or subfolders (store.de, store.com/de)
- Language translation per market
- Duties and import cost calculation at checkout
- Local payment methods per market
Markets advantages
- One catalog to maintain
- Unified inventory
- Single admin interface
- Simpler operations
- Lower total cost
Markets limitations
- Same product catalog for all markets (with market-specific visibility)
- Same overall site structure
- Limited branding variation per market
- Shared inventory pool
Multiple Stores
Separate store per region with complete independence.
How multiple stores work
- Each region has its own Shopify store
- Completely independent catalogs, themes, and settings
- Separate inventory per store
- Independent pricing and promotions
Multiple stores advantages
- Complete customization per region
- Different product assortments per market
- Regional branding flexibility
- Operational independence
- Regional inventory management
Multiple stores limitations
- Multiple catalogs to maintain
- Sync required if sharing products
- Higher total cost
- More complex operations
- Multiple admin interfaces
Decision Factors
Evaluate based on your specific situation.
Product catalog
Same products worldwide? Markets works well. Significantly different products per region? Multiple stores may be necessary.
Branding
Same brand globally with minor localization? Markets. Different brand positioning or visual identity per region? Multiple stores.
Operations
Centralized operations? Markets is simpler. Regional teams with autonomy? Multiple stores enable independence.
Inventory
Fulfilling from central warehouse to all regions? Markets with unified inventory. Regional warehouses with regional stock? Multiple stores map more naturally.
Pricing strategy
Simple currency conversion or moderate adjustments? Markets handles this. Complex regional pricing with completely different strategies? Multiple stores offer more control.
Hybrid Approaches
Not strictly either/or.
Markets for similar regions
Use Markets for regions with similar requirements (EU countries, for example). Use separate stores for regions with significant differences (like a Japanese market with very different needs).
Expansion stores
Shopify Plus includes expansion stores at no additional cost. Use the primary store with Markets for your main regions, and expansion stores for markets requiring complete independence.
Implementation Considerations
Practical factors for each approach.
Markets implementation
- Configure markets and pricing in admin
- Set up translations (manual or app-based)
- Configure duties and shipping per market
- Add local payment methods
- Set up domain structure
Multiple stores implementation
- Provision additional stores
- Sync catalog if sharing products
- Configure each store independently
- Set up any needed integrations per store
- Train teams on multiple admin interfaces
