Connecting Shopify to Fulfillment
Fulfillment is where orders become shipments. Integration between Shopify and fulfillment systems automates this process, reducing manual work and errors.
Data Flow
Order to fulfillment system
When orders are ready for fulfillment:
- Receive webhook or poll for new orders
- Transform order data to fulfillment system format
- Send to fulfillment API
- Handle acknowledgment or errors
Fulfillment to Shopify
When fulfillment system ships:
- Receive shipment notification
- Create fulfillment in Shopify with tracking
- Shopify notifies customer
Shopify Fulfillment API
Creating fulfillments
Use the Fulfillment API to mark orders as fulfilled. Include tracking number, carrier, and fulfilled line items.
Fulfillment orders
Newer approach using fulfillment orders for more complex scenarios including multi-location and third-party fulfillment.
Partial fulfillments
Not all items need to ship together. Create multiple fulfillments for one order as items ship.
Integration Patterns
Direct API integration
Custom code connecting Shopify API to fulfillment system API. Maximum control, requires development.
Middleware integration
iPaaS platforms with connectors for both systems. Faster to implement, less flexible.
3PL integrations
Many 3PLs have Shopify apps or native integrations. Check what your provider offers before building custom.
Common Challenges
Order timing
When should orders go to fulfillment? On payment capture? After fraud review? After a delay for modifications?
Address validation
Fulfillment systems may reject addresses Shopify accepted. Handle validation errors gracefully.
Inventory discrepancies
Fulfillment system inventory may differ from Shopify. Sync regularly and handle discrepancies.
Returns and cancellations
Orders cancelled after going to fulfillment need communication. Returns affect inventory in both systems.
Error Handling
Fulfillment errors affect customers directly.
Alert on failures
When orders fail to send to fulfillment, alert immediately. Delays mean delayed shipments.
Retry logic
Transient failures should retry. Persistent failures need investigation.
Manual fallback
When automation fails, have a manual process to ensure orders ship.
