GraphQL vs REST: Choosing Shopify API Approach

When building against Shopify's Admin API, one of the first decisions is GraphQL or REST. Both can do a lot of the same work, but the trade-offs, and Shopify's direction, increasingly point one way. Here is how to choose.

The core difference

REST exposes fixed endpoints that return predetermined data structures; you often fetch more than you need and make multiple calls to assemble a complete picture. GraphQL lets you request exactly the fields you want, across related objects, in a single query. For complex data needs, that precision means fewer round-trips and less over-fetching.

Where GraphQL wins

GraphQL shines when you need related data together, an order with its line items, customer and fulfillments, in one request, and when you want to minimize calls against rate limits. Its cost-based rate limiting rewards efficient queries. For most non-trivial integrations and apps, this efficiency is a real advantage.

Where REST still feels simpler

REST can be quicker for simple, single-resource operations and is familiar to more developers. For a one-off script that just needs a list of products, REST's simplicity is fine. But that convenience narrows as requirements grow.

Shopify's direction is clear

The decisive factor is that Shopify is investing in GraphQL as the future of its platform. Some newer capabilities are GraphQL-only, and parts of the REST Admin API have been designated legacy. Building new development on GraphQL keeps you aligned with where the platform is going rather than on a path Shopify is winding down.

Practical recommendation

For new app and integration development, default to GraphQL. Reserve REST for quick scripts or maintaining existing REST-based systems. Either way, the reliability disciplines, pagination, rate-limit handling, webhook robustness, matter more than the protocol choice itself.

Choose GraphQL for anything you expect to maintain and grow. It is both the more capable option and the one Shopify is building toward.
