Beyond Generic Recommendations
Most recommendation implementations disappoint because they show generic suggestions that customers ignore. Effective recommendations require the right algorithm, placement, and presentation.
This guide covers how to implement recommendations that customers actually click and convert on.
Recommendation Types
Different recommendation algorithms serve different purposes.
Collaborative filtering
"Customers who bought this also bought..." Uses purchase patterns across your customer base to find products that commonly sell together.
Works well for: Established stores with significant purchase history. Cross-category discovery.
Limitations: Needs substantial transaction data. Cold start problem with new products.
Content-based filtering
"Similar items based on attributes." Recommends products with similar characteristics: category, color, style, price range.
Works well for: New products without purchase history. Keeping customers in a relevant browse path.
Limitations: Can create filter bubbles. May miss cross-category opportunities.
Hybrid approaches
Most modern recommendation engines combine multiple signals: purchase history, browsing behavior, product attributes, and real-time session data.
Personalization levels
- Non-personalized: Same recommendations for everyone (bestsellers, trending)
- Segment-based: Different recommendations for customer segments
- Individual: Unique recommendations per customer based on their history
- Session-based: Real-time recommendations based on current browsing
More personalization typically performs better but requires more data and sophistication.
Placement Strategy
Where you show recommendations affects their impact.
Product pages
The most common placement. Effective recommendation types:
- Similar products: Keep them browsing if this product is not quite right
- Frequently bought together: Cross-sell complementary items
- Complete the look: Outfit or set completion
Cart page
Last chance to increase order value. Focus on:
- Accessories for items in cart
- Low-cost add-ons that do not require consideration
- Items that complete a set
Be careful not to distract from checkout. Position recommendations clearly as additions, not alternatives.
Homepage
For returning visitors, personalized recommendations based on browsing or purchase history perform well. For new visitors, bestsellers or trending items provide social proof.
Collection pages
Personal recommendations at the top of collections can surface relevant products that might be buried in sorting.
Post-purchase
Email recommendations based on what was just purchased. Focus on complementary products and replenishment reminders.
Implementation Options
Several paths exist for adding recommendations to Shopify.
Shopify native recommendations
The Product Recommendations API provides basic collaborative filtering. It is free and requires minimal setup but has limited customization.
Third-party apps
Apps like Rebuy, LimeSpot, Nosto, and Clerk provide sophisticated recommendation engines with:
- Multiple algorithm options
- A/B testing capabilities
- Advanced placement options
- Email and cross-channel personalization
- Analytics and reporting
Custom development
For unique requirements, custom recommendation systems can be built using ML services and the Shopify API. This is rarely necessary given the quality of available apps.
Common Mistakes
Avoid these patterns that reduce recommendation effectiveness.
Showing out-of-stock products
Recommendations that include unavailable products frustrate customers and waste the recommendation slot. Filter for in-stock items.
Recommending what is already in cart
If a customer has an item in their cart, do not recommend the same item. Exclude cart contents from recommendations.
Irrelevant recommendations
Showing men's shoes on a women's apparel page breaks context. Ensure recommendations respect browsing context.
Too many recommendations
Overwhelming customers with dozens of recommendations creates decision paralysis. 4-8 items is typically optimal per placement.
Ignoring mobile
Recommendations that work on desktop may not work on mobile. Ensure mobile layouts present recommendations effectively.
Measuring Success
Track specific metrics to evaluate recommendation performance.
Key metrics
- Click-through rate: What percentage of viewers click recommendations
- Conversion rate: What percentage of recommendation clicks result in add-to-cart or purchase
- Revenue per visitor: How recommendations affect overall revenue
- AOV impact: Average order value with and without recommendation clicks
A/B testing
Test recommendation algorithms, placements, and presentation against each other. What works for one store may not work for another.
